International investment is one of the growing markets in the world. The year 2013 witnessed the largest number (59 cases) of arbitrations directly related to international investment agreements, with 42 cases filed in 2014. It is estimated that the MENA region will generate investments worth more than 755 billion USD in the coming five years. This growth will inevitably have an effect on the number of disputes.

The Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution (BCDR-AAA), in conjunction with the Investment Treaty Forum (ITF) of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL), will be holding a four-day (6 to 9 December 2015) intensive course on International Investment Arbitration specifically tailored for the MENA region, followed by a one-day (10 December 2015) conference.

The four-day course will provide the theoretical knowledge and the practical know-how from some of the biggest names and leading practitioners in the field of international investment both in the region and abroad. The course will revolve around key issues, including:

  • General overview.
  • Developments in the second half of the 20th century and recent global trends.
  • The settlement and management of investor-state disputes and the procedures for resolving such disputes.
  • The conduct of investor-state arbitration proceedings, including initiation of such proceedings, constitution of tribunals and the challenges of arbitrators.
  • Awards, post-award remedies and enforcement of awards.

The one-day conference will be hosting some of the the leading investment arbitration specialists, and is expected to be attended by key players in the investment industry. The conference will revolves around key topics including:

  • Avoiding and addressing conflicts of interest in Arbitral Appointments
  • Post Award Recourse
  • Bilateral and Multilateral Investment Agreements in the Arab World: The Rediscovery of the Investment Agreement of the Arab League and the Islamic Conference
  • What’s next for the MENA region and Investment Treaties? Are Arab States Being Left Behind?
